It's a cool story with an ocean of online fancontent just there for the exploring. When I got into it in 2015, I loved how there was years of fanart already existing to look through.
How they hear about it? Well Homestuck as well as any popular fandom will have it's tendrils in any new fandom for a long time, whether through creator influence or overlapping fans. Anyone obsessed enough with a new fandom will eventually be exposed to Homestuck if they dig deep enough

And yeah, tons of stuff that's still crack for young/creative/identity forming minds, doesn't matter if it's a bit old. Not every kid just wants to burn through what's brand new and trendy
