Television talk shows as a whole are rapidly becoming more and more unprofitable. Apparently Kimmel and Fallon have taken measures to cut down on costs to keep their shows afloat but Colbert never did.
So a common talking point is that Colbert had the highest ratings in late night. Which isn't even true because the late night talk show with the highest ratings in the US is apparently Gutfeld, some show on Fox News. Keep in mind it's more difficult for a cable show to get higher ratings than network shows like Colbert, Kimmel, Fallon have.
I haven't watched Gutfeld myself (I doubt it's any good), but from a purely financial standpoint I doubt it cost much money and I imagine he pretty much has the market cornered on "late night talk show hosts who DON'T make fun of Trump constantly". His show doesn't even have to be good but he has that market locked in while all the other late night hosts have to compete over the "making fun of Trump" market.
