Christians venerate Mary. If you don't believe that Mary can pray for you to God, then you do not believe in any Saint, which goes against Biblical traditions. End of the discussion.

one they are not idols, but foci; no one believes Mary inhabits the icons and statues dedicated to her, just like nobody believes Jesus inhabits the crucifix or the cross; this unlike the pagans, which literally had the notion of spirits and objects being one, like the Roman Numen. Second of all, Mary is still alive as a Saint on God's side, so it's no graven image, just like depictions of Jesus.
