Alice is the only character from that era who isn't a Mary Sue. Compare her to Jill Valentine, the character she was written to replace, who is a total Mary Sue that never loses and isn't allowed to receive any kind of lasting injuries. The reason Capcom are afraid to use Leon as a horror protag is that nothing bad is allowed to happen to Leon. There's no stakes.
