I didn't find it tacked on, if only because we've seen that kind of theme crop up in the comic before with Belkar to give us a better mindset into someone who's Chaotic Evil. Just like Xykon, Belkar hates the idea of being obligated towards society, hates being obligated towards another being, and particularly hates being treated as an inferior by anyone else, hence his murderous rage towards almost every authority figure that looks down on him. The key difference is Belkar's delirious vision of Soon advising him that it's a lot better to trick others into thinking he's on their side rather than continuing to slam his head against the prison bars.

Xykon is what you get when you've got someone who refuses to even pretend to play the game of Society like Belkar does, to the point that he ripped his own living flesh off to do so. He doesn't understand nor care about society, but he does understand power and what it does for him, so that's what his worldview revolves around; Power in as great a concentration as you can muster to remove anyone who can inconvenience you beyond your extremely low bar for tolerance, and style. And in a pinch, style can slide.
