I think a fair point of comparison is the OST to Fallout: Sonora made by Nobody's Nail Machine. By the time Sonora released, he had managed to nail down Mark Morgan's style for both Fallout and Fallout 2. I really love the variety he achieves here with the OSTs for Sonora and its DLC. Just a couple examples:

Army remnants on the edge of the world, outside of America, amassing forces, readying themselves for future expansion. The march is slow, irregular, but still presents danger. There is no threat for now. There may be a confrontation in the future. It is not for you to decide.

People presenting themselves as the heroes of the land in spite of strict taxation. Much more organized, at the ready, in the middle of a fight. They believe that their cause is just. Of course, you can join them.

A tribe of cannibals who have kidnapped one of your compatriots. Lots of bones and idols of a long-gone vault. Even children are active combatants. Nothing good can come from this.

Your isolated home village, razed by bandits. As you help and get out, a wistful guitar reminds you that things will never be the same now. There's only one way and the way is out.
