In my opinion, a lot of the Vs. Kris fanbattles revolve around Kris seething about how the player took control of their life and now they'll finally be able to exact revenge upon you. Which clearly doesn't lie up with canon, because if anything, Kris is using the SOUL in order to carry out Carol's plans.
The fact is, what Kris wants is the opposite of what their friends want. A confrontation between Kris's goals and our and Susie's goals seems inevitable. To keep it from getting "too edgy", I'd focus on the aspect of how Kris feels like they HAVE to do this because of their promise instead of trusting their friends.
