Dirty little secret of software development is that outside of the tech world, the pay is dog shit. The salary surveys that universities and tech companies show you only include jobs at wealthy tech companies in high cost cities. If you're slinging code for Kroger in Cincinnati, you're going to get paid shit. Most programming jobs are at companies like Kroger, not at FAANG.

Software developer is one of the most common jobs now. A few years ago, it actually was the number one job in Colorado. More of them than cashiers. More than truck drivers. More than nurses. Most software developers don't work at tech companies. They work for boring, mundane companies, doing boring internal intranet crap. FAGMAN and startups have altered the public's perception of what's a middle of the road white collar job.
Pic related is based on paycheck data rather than what employers report on surveys. Most people have no idea just how many software developers there are crammed into non-tech departments at non-tech companies, getting paid ok but not great salaries. Tech companies report high salaries to make themselves look prosperous so investors will put money into them and employees will want to work there (even if their starting salary is less than expected). They also aren't a good reflection of software development as a whole since most software development happens at non-tech companies. The programmers working on the search function for the weekly ad on Kroger's website aren't getting rich.
