It's a bad idea to make a "meta" unit shit to use, because it creates a chilling trickle-down effect. If the metas' advantages are too salient to ignore (e.g. flight, canto), you'll simply divert additional resources to fixing them, taxing the supply that could have gone to uplifting non-metas.
Like, imagine if all your stat boosters and exp are going towards fixing some shit broken-down wyvern who doesn't come kicking ass out of the box. There goes your scrimblo's lunch, too.
This is also why Jagens can be a good thing. They demand very little to be and remain competent, so you can depend on them while you funnel resources into your shitters.
