That's how it is with all planes. I honestly think that growing up with Star Wars fucks up your perception of how big a fighter is supposed to be. You get familiar with the actual size of IRL fighter aircraft and suddenly the X-Wing looks like a kit-car because it's scaled to WW2 fighters.
