The point at which people are casting 6 drops, not only can people board wipe, but it's probably getting necessary to board wipe because engines are online.

But either way, more and more commanders are printed where it IS the game plan. More than half the deck will be dedicated to triggering the commander, and if the commander is not on board the deck is significantly weakened.
If you pop someone's commander you're very often crippling them for a rotation or more.
