Ikusa is a mess of technical terms and nuanced emotions combined with quite a bit of world building. I didn't read every last part because the translation was unbearable, but I read enough to understand how a translation could be terribly wrong. I remember looking on l once where someone mentioned Monogatari and it seemed to be the consensus that reading it in Japanese is like a whole different story. The anime is probably mostly tolerable simply because it has less words to translate and can convey more visually.
