Most of it is not overcrowded anon, just like with any parks if you avoid going during peak season/major holidays there are vast stretches of trail/parkland where you can avoid seeing another soul if that's your jam, and even the popular parks and trails are not too crowded if you avoid peak hours. Central Park for example typically gets far more crowded than any LA parks do, but that's because it is THE NYC park and a little more accessible than most trails in LA. We have snow in the mountains and decent skiing at big bear in the winter not too far away. During Covid you could go from the beach to the snow in like an hour or so, still possible on Christmas day I imagine.
I will say long island is also pretty kino and not too far away for NYC.
