The "White" American ethnicity is an unstable confederation of identities, always at risk of falling apart. In order to remain together, they have to find new "American" things to center themselves on.
African-Americans are the only non-white "Americans" whose culture is neither foreign (as with Mexicans) nor "White", so their cultural innovations can easily be accepted without risking cultural conquest or imbalance.
