It's weird. I was just thinking about this.
I bounced off of Japanese media for a long time, but finally realized they just approach stuff with a completely different mindset like you're describing.
Like in the west, it's pretty much accepted that media is meant to depict what's "real" or some kind of "idealized reality" or even if it's fantasy and stuff from the imagination, the West works to make you believe in the fantasy as if it's real. Like George Lucas having his roots in documentary filmmaking. He overtly talks about trying to make you believe what you're seeing and have it "feel" real.
Japan doesn't do this very much at all. Instead of trying to make the imaginary seem real, they just go ahead and draw the imaginary in all its direct unreal glory.
