In general, I honest to god believe this is fallout from:
>Game Theory (spawned a generation of people who try to piece together the full story of any given piece of media based purely on breadcrumbs, even if they have to make an insane amount of mental gymnastics and literal headcanon to do so)
>Five Nights at Freddy's (also created an entire generation of people who think it's normal to rewrite your story because someone else figured it out - completely sacrificing long-term narrative cohesion for the sake of some nonsensical "twist' - or literally just to complicate the story and it's world for purely arbitrary reasons, a la Bite of '83/'87)
So now when people make a bullshit "theory" and it ends up being predictably wrong, they think Toby just outright rewrote his story in order to be 2 steps ahead.
