That is how I already dress for summer heat, but with a cowboy hat, ball cap, bandanna, or boonie hat instead of pith helmet and I prefer to go with a lighter beige shirt in the sun. I was genuinely considering rocking a pith helmet during my Singapore trip for the memes but decided that I'm already going to stick out enough in a crowd without going full colonial LARP (still might do it a few times anyway because it's funny, but will probably stick to more American hats since I'm American).
I generally wear cotton or cotton-heavy blends. I've heard good things about linen and silk but haven't done any real research into it, nor do I know much about different fabric weaves and weights. My experience has been that synthetic layers start to stink faster than cotton so I'll likely be avoiding those.
