Criticism is subjective, but most of the complaints of VIIR were that there is too much backtracking and needless padding, animation lengths, and other timewasting junk of that nature. There were complaints about the combat system not being ATB turn based or being too easy/too hard, complaints about the graphics being hit and miss with some areas being really shoddily put together especially on PS4 at release, the daytime lighting in the slums doesn't look good and it should be a lot darker and dim/hazy. There's lots of complaints about the first part being the Midgar portion of the game and how that's false advertisement (they told everyone when they announced the game that it was Midgar only). There are endless complaints about the Whispers existing and what they mean as a meta-narrative conversation with the critics, something that basically throws a middle finger to the audience and every nerd who has made crying about FFVII their life for the last 20 years. There are endless complaints about Sephiroth existing where they think he shouldn't exist, endless complaints about every single little change in the tone or the story. There is criticism for story and pacing, there is criticism for the gameplay design, there is criticism for the voice acting and writing, for the music, for the story changes. Everything.

Whatever element you can imagine, there's criticism for it. That's the point. No matter what the game is or what it could be, there would have been massive amounts of criticism for it. Saying this fact, does not dismiss criticism, nor insinuate that there is no such thing as valid criticism.
