Bros... I just finished FFVII for the first time.

Holy fuck, what a game. 100% a 10/10 god tier masterpiece. I have missed out so fucking hard by not playing it earlier.

The whole final hour was probably one of the best of any game I ever played.

I think Air Tam Storm does damage based on the amount of Materia equipped. I was able to box with Emerald without KotR with Tifa and Yuffie. Since Master Fist boosts power based on Tifa being injured and Conformer gets stronger based on enemy level. So Tifa and Yuffie aren't overly concerned with having a lot of Materia to fight

I beat it for the first time last year on OG hardware (30 year old zoomer), and while it wasn't bad, it was very underwhelming; so dry and boring that it took me almost two months to finish even when I didn't do much side content. Just a drag.

Okay so I did eventually find Yuffie and it was really stupid. So it was during the part of the game when you're supposed to find Cloud in Mideel. I had no idea where Cloud was so I just started landing wherever I could. I landed on one of the tiny islands on the outskirts of the map that had a forest on it. And that's where I found Yuffie. But I was 9 - 10 at the time, so I thought that's just where you're supposed to recruit her. 2/3rds through the game.

For the love of God, play a modern port or emulation with speedup. The game is soooo fucking slow-paced. The random encounters become so aggravating, even just running away takes so long and you will trigger fights mere seconds apart.

Outside of two enemies in the entire game that for some reason are stronger than bosses and one-shot you (the red eye enemies, and the black dragons only if you use magic against them), every trashmob in the game is a complete braindead cannon fodder pushover that serves no purpose other than to feed you exp. after you mash one button to kill it. The designs aren't even remotely interesting - they look like the fucking digimon reject pile and most of the time they don't even match their environment at all.

If you were a kid in 97 and this was your big game and the graphics and scope was mind-blowing unlike anything you'd ever seen, you'd be a lot more forgiving how slow-paced it is, but today it just felts agonizingly slow in a way few games of that era or earlier feel.

I just consider the remakes as a weird sequel which they essentially are. They are overly hated here, I don’t like all the changes they made but at the end of the day I like the combat style and I like seeing the world and characters in high quality graphics and hearing the fully orchestrated music of Uematsu. The original exists and is 10/10, the remakes are an interesting experiment that hit hard but also miss hard in some aspects. The only angle I see the hate is people that wanted a 1:1 remake with beautiful graphics being the only change essentially, but the original looks just as good to me and the music is still amazing even with lesser hardware. At the end of the day I enjoy Remake and Rebirth but don’t accept them as a replacement for the original.

I've been delaying playing FF7 for 16 years. I discovered it when I was 11 but kept delaying it for some reason. Is it truly a game every gamer should play at least once? Think I might start soon.

I played Xenogears first though so going to FF7 after experiencing the story of Xenogears felt like FF7 wasnt even trying.

The problem I have is a new generation will go to the Remakes first and not truly get what made 7 good in the first place. They're poorly paced, and to truly get what they're trying to do narrative wise, they expect you to parse meta-commentary on the OG story while still trying to tell you what that story was in the first place. Aerith's clusterfuck of a death scene is the epitome of that, as it assumes you would have seen her death at some point online over the years, thus favored the new "twist" angle that completely leaves a lot of younger gamers in the dark if they haven't. It felt more concerned with giving Nomura and the others a chance to try something new and not get bored, instead of telling a coherent story for the player

Im just never ever really felt nostalgia as a real thing (i think i got true nostalgia in remake during that "aerith and cloud going through the rooftops" sequence and when "that day 5 years ago" plays in rebirth during the flashback once you have to go check sephiroth in the mansion) and as i grow older, i tend to find flaws everywhere i look specially in things i like.
Basically, i dont think the things i love are as good as i thought they were. Once i played remake/rebirth, it kinda opens your eyes with the original, showing how rushed it is compared to the remake. Still, i dont take it as a real criticism since the original game is an old game.

The game having a fun materia system that makes the game easy is fine. The hardest part of the game isn’t even Ruby and Emerald weapon, it’s fighting the serpent instead of skipping it with the chocobo because it’s early on. I mean I’ve played a fair bit of RPGs, and it’s always been the case that the early game is harder than the mid and late game with the exception of the final boss and superbosses and that applies here somewhat. I rarely ever grind too it’s just you have more abilities and stronger bases later on.

Turn-based rpgs are badly designed.
Every random encounter is the same 3-4 monsters per location with the same 1-2 attacks and you are responding by spamming the confirm button to get this over with or run away if possible. The novelty of the random encounters quickly wears off and you are stuck watching the same sequences of animation over and over again. It is jarring to have your adventure interrupted every 5 to 15 steps you make all throughout the game. You know there will be no novelty and it's tedious.

VII has by far the best final boss fight of any game ever and it's incredible how they pulled it off considering the combat in this game is turn based and not to mention the archaic graphics too. In the 7th heaven launcher, the mod is called Postscriptthree's Gameplay Tweaks. And the music fix is a toggle in that mods settings. Note that this mod only makes it so the correct tracks are played during certain cutscenes. If you want OST quality music and not the shitty default PC midi music you'll need to install another mod for that.

The amount of padding they put into the animations around completing those "activities" is insane. Some of them are over 30 seconds before you can interact with the controls again, and even the shortest is like ~12.

"Aeris dies" overshadowed everything else as spoiler content for the game, that and people jerking off to how cool Sephiroth was. I was pretty mindblown when the game started pulling in the Cloud schizo plotlines. All that is great. It's really funny that a mostly underbaked character's death is what became the defining plot spoiler of the game.

(used to be that it also sounded like ass unless you had a specific Yamaha souncard but that's for days long past).
