i only used radar a handful of times, and i don't remember it working very well for me so i just turned it off, but i could have just been retarded and understood it
i had a much easier time simply listening for planes in the night (back when audio worked correctly) and hunting them down that way, but radar could sometimes tell me if there were planes in a general direction, however that's something i would just know already because i knew the routes bombers would take

more importantly, heavy fighters/interceptors were useful because bombers actually had a decent amount of durability, so a bf109 or a mustang typically didn't have enough firepower to take out a bomber reliably
