The honest to god truth is that whether you called it VC or DM back in the day depended on what server you were on. On my server it was definitively VC and anyone who said DM would be teased for it. On other servers (including an RPPVP server I played on) it was the other way around.
Anyone saying "it was ONLY VC" or "it was ONLY DM" is a larper who didn't play until classic. I have the sneaking suspicion you fall into this category.

You are also a larper. For most of Vanilla and most of Classic as well, it was understood that DM meant DM North because after the first month of DM being out there was barely any reason to run West or East. Unless you were a paladin or warlock, I suppose.
