How come journalists who had been in Chechnya to cover the war later went to Afghanistan and couldn't find a trace of Chechen presence? How come that in thousands of captured insurgents in detention none was Chechen?

The US was not willing to support Chechen separatism but criticized the brutality of the Russian response. After 9/11 all Russia had to do was hint at the Chechens being associated with the Taliban and suddenly the criticism died down.
