I think that in a broader sense, what we are seeing is people with pathological social needs that they have no way of meeting. They try to be happy alone because they see so many people who evidently are, but fail to recognize that most of those people have ample social skills but have simply chosen to stop using them. They, on the other hand, are alone because nobody likes them and their peer group have mostly dissipated because it's not hard to find something better in life, and those who remain merely tolerate one another and covers it with low effort, no cost platitudes and patronizing.
They're leftovers. They spent their post adolescent years trying to distinguish themselves by being different, and missed the part where not fitting in switched from being their choice to being society's final judgment.
