I am now doubly confident in my reading that it's just game budget limitations. Verso's ending with Alicia is basically as dead. You have the intact Eiffel tower, the family, the grave and the rest of Paris looks completely lifeless. If the point of the ending is that Maelle is no longer living an escapism life, shouldn't Paris be filled with people and look more alive than anything in Lumiere? You could very easily headcanon that it looked like that in itself was already a painting.

It's just game budget limitations, dude.
