I'm with you. But for some reason, ateliers today are hyper-focused on technique but never teach a thing about composition, narrative and storytelling. It's like we've lost the ability to develop a narrative within a painting.
Pic related is Will St John, one of the best painters to come out of the (american) atelier system. He's represented by Saatchi Yates, holds exhibitions worldwide, and this is the shit he paints. Flawless technique, but wtf is this?
