I'm trying to seriously learn about photography as art, and I'm reading, but I just don't get it
Take A Sea of Steps for instance, I'm reading this primer and it says:
>"Remarkable for its composition and sense of light and space, the photograph conveys the climbing up the stairs, as if analogous to ascending toward the divine serenity symbolized by the illuminated archway"
>"he vertical lines of the columns rise out of the curve of the steps that seem to flow and swell like ocean waves; what Evans' called "a sea of steps."
Like, I don't get it. I just don't get composition, what they mean by form and structure, I DON'T GET IT

Soft light, that goes from dark to light as you move up the stairs.

Dont hurt your brain too much. This picture is boring. It's just stairs and pillars that someone with more skill than the photographer made. The description is just gobbledy gook that some stuck up art student scribbled down to fill a page. It doesn't even have any color. Boring.

Art =looking for more than just the exact thing in the photo.

This is also where all the memes come from because you can literally just make any claim whatsoever about extra meaning.

Ok, I'm in a good mood, I really love the photo and I got some time so I'll bite. I can comment on it.
>tl;dr It guides your eye, it is 3 dimensional, it tells a story, it has sublime lighting, low contrast helps, and the location is great.

I've been a photographer for some 25 years, but I earn my living being a professional, nationally recognized arch-viz 3d artist working in the top studio. Setting up lights and looking for compositions is what I have done for a living for a very long time. Let me turn on my autism for a moment, even though I think that over-analyzing art is very gay.

Look at my picrelated. Now look at OP pic. See how the photographer in OP has managed to turn a setting that says absolutely nothing at all other than "nice old building" at first glance in my picrelated, into a statement. Compare these 2 photos. How he looked around the room and chose that portal, those columns, and that part of the stairs inb my pic, and then framed it like OP pic. I can give you the autistic analysis why it works, but going by it is missing the point, like playing a solo over a song, going through scales mechanically, instead of by feel.

So why this photo works
Lighting:
Lighting makes or breaks a photo. Lighting literally does most of the heavy lifting in my field of work, not the detailed high poly models or the most realistic material shaders. Composition can be ok, but lighting must be superb. It's the classic "difficult to make stuff look good at noon" thing. In the OP pic the light is very pleasant and subtle (I imagine a slight overcast and a lot of bounced light). The diagonal that's formed on the bottom half of the photo, notice how it goes from dark to light very smoothly, how the foreground is in the dark and goes smoothly brighter. This is a trick that just works so often, darker foreground/bottom edge, be it a stone, bush or a river in a nature photo, a ledge, top of a sofa, whatever. How in the darker foreground only the rolled edges of the stairs are brightly accented by the light (accents are nice), gradually switching the same darks&highlights when going up the stairs. How the light suddenly goes brighter in front of, and dims under the portal, leaving the old stairs looking literally like waves at sea, then it goes brighter again through the portal. And the second white portal behind the first one just fits so well in that part of the composition. That clear white element looks very pleasing to the eye in an otherwise low contrast photo. How the front plane of the portal and pillars is dark and on the right edge of the photo they turn bright along with the rising stair-diagonal of the mid-photo.

Composition:
The diagonal that goes through the middle of the photo in a smooth arc, just the right size and angle. The horizontal, square stairs juxtaposed with the round vertical pillars. The pillars aren't too much, it's a small portion of the photo, just enough, the plain wall near them gives some separation and breathing room between the vertical and horizontal elements. The portal put in the upper left third being just the right size, see how he has managed to frame the second portal in the first one. Now a heavyweight compositional element here that makes it good is having 3 distinct planes: serene foreground-plane stairs, the mid-plane with the portal & pillars providing the "action", and the brighter far-plane providing context and guiding the eye. It's leading somewhere. It tells a story. I use the 3 plane approach literally all the time when creating scenes from absolutely nothing, as clients usually only give me house/building/object drawings or a model and I have to make the world around it, if I'm not merging it into a real photo, video, or a drone shot. That 3 plane approach works in many scenarios, landscape, architecture, people, whatever.

And bottom line - it's just a nice piece of old architecture. I'm pretty confident that the photographer thought consciously very little of what I just wrote. I've trained people, and have the art-school students come get their job credits at our studio, I'm also a musician, play a few instruments and write lyrics, so in regard of getting the 'arts' or not getting it - what I have noticed over the years is that you either have "it", or you don't. The "it" being sense of beauty, a feel for the composition, flow, arts. You either got it in you or you just don't, and that's usually evident at a young age. If you don't have it - go be a car mechanic or work at an office or something, else you'll be miserable. For your own hobbies - don't let nobody ever stop you.

Appreciate your post. High quality contribution.

But the "it" that you've either got or you don't, it can be trained. But it takes thousands of hours and either a lot of dedicated study, or a lot of unguided flailing around and thousands of hours more.

You typically see people develop that capability to produce aesthetic art at two points in life: either when they're young and still in school, or when they're old after retiring. Because once you get into the grind of daily work and adult life, it just takes too much energy to spend those thousands of hours needed to develop it.

And again, look at people who develop artistic ability in school: you can generally recognize two points in young people's lives where they develop that ability. Either they develop it very early in life, like in the first couple years of grade school, and that's usually because they're doing art with their parents or their parents are paying for art classes, OR they develop it in high school (usually the second two years), when a teen starts developing independent initiative and pursues what interests them.

The exception might be autists. Either they're born with brains wired to just naturally pump out the right ratios and patterns to be aesthetic, or they aren't and they can never move beyond center-framing their subject (advanced autists will use rule of thirds) without any regard to other compositional elements, recognition of aesthetic ratios, visual rhythm, weighting elements, etc. (I think this is why Sony G Master lenses and high-megapixel cameras are so popular for autists and this board in general -- you can just center frame your subject, open the lens up, and you'll have a nice-looking picture with lots of detail, and why this board is so pessimistic about m43 -- technically inferior photos, but with artistic elements (that autists struggle to produce or recognize), still create very pleasing photos).

This is how you can identify wank. "it's just right" is not a category, it doesn't mean anything, it tells you nothing. If you can't explain _why it's right you have failed in explaining. the whole post is just hot air. if you're saying "you either got it or you don't, kid" - thats a pretty surefire sign you don't got it. the only skill you developed is to talk like you did.

Its because of the gross colors and unnatural contrast. Even film, as inferior as it is, looks better than that shit. Color, lighting, and contrast are the most important photo specs, and low res and low DR digishits throw them away entirely resulting in trashy and fake looking photography.

>its another NERDS CANT ART
Nerds aka autists are the only people actually producing art. All the art you think was made by good looking normal people was made by a smaller amount of autistic jewish guys behind the scenes.

Look at historical painters and any serious auteur, they are all autistic and always have been. Science isnt a thing due to autism machine brains, science is an offshoot of autists getting bored and the dispassionate machine brained behavior in science and engineering comes from normies who lack the savant/schizo-like mind of an autistic person.

The people who only see a sharpness chart are the normies. G master lenses exist for normies. Autistos perceive so much extra they overload and start flapping their hands.

What? The socially inept autists here are all the ones obsessing over their film gear. Autists always head off to LF film eventually.

Everyone I see on the internet and know IRL with a G master or canon L and canon a7r5ii is a huge fucking normie, no more autistic than a "car guy" (so not autistic at all, just a gearhead and competitive spender) and usually into photography as a side hustle instead of as photography. Like "its a living" event photography, and doing lens reviews to score free gear and ad revenue. Want autistic photography? Garry Winogrand was notoriously autistic, for instance. Such a huge autist he overanalzyed a half dozen wide angle primes and settled on a little known canon 28mm f3.5 and obsessed over the interplay between shooting and developing. Ansel Adams was notoriously autistic.

You have seen car guys, and thought they were autists
Autists would be rejected by any group of car guys

As someone into photography instead of a side hustle I find mid-tier zooms, not L/GM zooms or L/G/GM/S/whatever primes, are actually the best because their rendering is very close to european made prime lenses from the 80s and 90s. Good enough, as good as anyone has ever needed, but not obnoxiously perfect. Neutral colors that are easy to work with, non-fucked contrast.

Tamron and sigma zooms are an absolute no. The only ones i've ever had strongly emphasized high midtones and deepened shadows so everyone looked like a wax statue. The tamron 28-75 f28 II is the absolute fucking worst here, looks like a 12 year old played with curves to make every photo dramatic. GM lenses usually look gross. The 35mm f1.4 and 24mm f1.4 GM look extremely gross.

>>4407240
Half of that is the lenses, the rendering between the 20mm f1.7 and 20mm f1.7 ii is obvious when you use both. Tones too bad to fix on the v1. Use any fucking $80 nikkor and receive better results.

>shape and structure
Form is a synonym of shape, give or take.
Structure means the organization of objects.
An object in this context might be a line (or something resembling a line), a gradient (or something resembling a gradient), a shape (...), a color, or what have you, and structuring means organizing them in the frame to make up a picture.
>organization aka composition
You can organize these objects in any way you want, the simple fact that there's an organization will generally make a picture look """better""" than one without any sort of organization.
An easy composition consists of lining up things.
Think of a pedestrian scene with three people - you can take a few steps to move to a position where those three people look aligned in the frame, even if they're not aligned in reality.
Many elements of the picture can be aligned, and not necessarily in the same way.
Think of a field where only three trees are planted, each one bigger than the other - you can wait until the sun is positioned so that the tallest tree is also the brightest one, the middle one is only partly illuminated, and the smaller one is in the shadows, so two linear relationships of size and brightness that go in the same direction, but you can also organize these things in different ways, like having these relationships go in opposite directions.
>how to practice
You start slowly, only organizing a few things at first, and the more time passes the more you start noticing ways in which you can organize other things as well.
Posts about autism, imagination and armchair psychology were made by ignorant philistines and can safely be ignored.

Beauty is one of the primary goals of art, so there's no reason a pretty landscape can't be artistic. Capturing the beautiful countryside has long been fodder for the painter and the photographer has followed in that tradition for 150 years. I also think by the time I'm old and grey many will accept phone photos as art, even though it irks me. The reality is photography is always going to be about subject matter to most people. An interesting looking geographic formation or animal behavior photographed in high quality and at a good angle with good composition will always be something people like. Photos of people doing things or sitting for formal portraits will always be something people like. But what separates art from image generation is the photographer's sense, the choices they make for the photos. Many people can paint, few can paint in a unique style. Many can take pictures, few can photograph.

This is about only one of the many comically wrong points you made, but by your description a picture is artistic or not depending on what you personally say about it .
Can you understand why that has 100% to do with your subjective taste and 0% to do with the picture?
You might argue that you're only going to have nice things to say about artistic pictures and not about those that are "just pretty to look at", but if you don't have objective criteria to use it is just your subjective taste.

You only started posting more because you bought a new camera (classic gearfag notphotog pattern, get bored buy and shoot more)
You get shit on every time you post a photo because your photos are really poorly done with awful pallid yellow green colors and absolutely no composition. Often no identifiable subject.
And then you insist you are being stalked by muh m43 tranny guy from /an/ because someone knew your dogs name and that it dives into puddles of crap, as if theres no way /p/ has more than one /an/ fag on it, and in the midst of this schizophrenia you demand people post for you to prove basic criticism like "improve your puke colors" holds weight

And then they dont because they dont want you to accuse them of being this zoophile stalker that doesnt exist.

Repeat. Your problem is you cant take criticism unless everyone plays your game and acknowledges your nonexistent importance first, and then proves themselves worthy of telling you that your photo is ass.

The guy was talking a lot of shit about these butterfly pictures, but they were technically challenging to get right.
The DoF on a 3-5x magnification shot on 8x10 is incredibly thin and diffusion effect is exaggerated significantly when shooting at high magnification.

I even had to develop my own focusing techniques to be able to get such fine focus on the high level magnification. There was no manual or any info online about how to take these shots.

These look stunning when contact printed on azo paper with amidol developer.

Lol! You really are a silly guy. I get it. I've devoted my life to taking care of animals and giving them the best life possible in return for healthy and delicious meat and eggs to sustain my family and community. My days are spent moving sacks of grain around and trudging through mud to take care of all my animals.
I show my love for animals in a different way than furries. I own a stunningly beautiful property that feels like my own little heaven where I keep most of them. It's what I've always wanted to do.

You know I've heard the advice on here many times to take pictures of something you know a lot about and what you're truly passionate about. I like that one if you haven't heard it before. Taking compelling pictures of farm animals is pretty tough! I don't see much interesting stuff online really.

They need to actually be doing something or look cool to be compelling, and they have been bred for 10,000 years to do nothing, look contemptible, and be easy for a retarded child to kill and eat.

Horse photography is bigger than sheep photography. Dogs and cats are in more decent pictures than chickens. Even show chickens. People would rather look at parrots. Livestock rarely feature unless in unusual situations. Wonder why.

Have you ever owned goats, sheep, pigs, etc? If you have enough of them it can become a big headache to manage them all. A LOT can go wrong specifically because of their behavior. It isn't like raising a turtle in a terrarium, I know that has its own challenges, but he isn't climbing out because he is simply bored...

These guys bust down fences, dig under them, tear up your ground, stampede you for food, kill themselves on accident. All sorts of crazy shit. Especially goats and pigs...

>doing something or look cool
Yeah, I agree, and I do that, but you can also take a picture of an idyllic or beautiful scene including them, or cute portraits and they can be good pictures. Simply photographing cool looking animals is not too interesting to me. I prefer trying to convey emotion through my animal pictures. My favorites always make me feel something more than "cool" or "woah" when I look at them. I think this is lost on the majority of people without a deep connection to them, but idk... lots of people like animals.

The owner of these horses thought this pic was pretty sweet. I need to find an example of what I'm talking about. Sorry for the bad pic.

Yeah still better than yours - way better contrast, proper camera operation, uncreative composition but at least there is composition, and having some sort of agenda brings it up a level

Do you think your blurry dirty sheep snaps would ever be hung in a rich vets office if they could get her photos instead? Really doubtful. There’s nothing else to them, not even the most basic level of visual entertainment, it’s just a sloppy photo of a thing. You should be able to see the difference between real purposeful photography and lining up snapshits. Even stephen shore could create some interest and eye drawing effect sometimes. A dust covered crooked photo of a group of sheep just doesnt do it.

Even the formulaic is still in better taste than shit thrown at the wall 99.9999% if the time.

Wow. Crazy opinion. Thanks! I think my sheep picture has motion to it, which was the point. You know? Feeding is a chaotic time. I tried to get that. It has some visual interest to it from the motion. I would say that's pretty fair. I was also using grainy film. Kind of a bummer you can't see the composition or intention of any of my photographs tho! Not even the cow reflection in the water? It looks great on the wall.

I don't think I edited that picture either. I wouldn't print it looking like that! How did I improperly use my camera? The picture is in focus. You know film has very high latitude, so that overexposed horn could be recovered, right??

Our two cow pics are composed almost exactly the same and I like that the shed is in the background combined with the rain in mine. I guess we have different tastes!

I get that there's a few turbo-retards & lolcows on every board, but why the fuck do you idiots have to engage with them? It's like wrestling a pig in shit - utterly pointless, both of you are covered in shit, only the pig is enjoying the process. If you'd just manage to exercise some basic self-control this thread would have 20 posts, almost all on-topic. There is no point in telling a retard that he's retarded - it just doesn't register and he's completely unable to reflect on it.

The bullshit that you engage with in here is as useful as showing your bare cock to the full moon.

There are reasons things "feel" good or not. And those reasons can be explained and pointed out. Just like you can say music has to "feel" good and no more. You can explain why dissonant tones, diminished chords, tritones or some garbled chromatic mess don't necessarily feel good, how a random chromatic, out-of-key, out-of-tempo, sloppily technique thing a'la Derek Bailey or a small child can be very off-putting actually. And why for example "I-V-vi-IV" chord progression with in-scale melody feels very good to everyone, if a bit cliché, but feels good nonetheless. Then you can start expanding with off key chords or notes here or there to break the so called "rules" of harmony and melody and do something great and interesting.

Same applies to writing and poetry.

Same goes for lighting, color, and composition. Of course you can spout some massive bs about a piece like a stereotypical high-school art-teacher waxing embarrassing esoteric, but you can explain why something feels good and why something does not to the majority of people.

Then there are the "neurodivergent" people with random genetic differences in brain structure to the extent they may think that eating chalk sticks or crayons is good cuisine (through no fault of their own), but we're not splitting hairs here.

Sharp lenses are for cropping so you dont have to do the asian tourist squat to frame your banal stair and corner snaps properly. That’s all it ever has been.

The news photography meta is 50mp, 24mm f2, max out shutter, crop down to 1mp if needed. no one actually uses whole 50mp photos its just a cool trick to spend less time masturbating with equipment like speedracer mcgearshifter. Elliot Erwitt was doing this stuff back in the 40s and no one noticed because 35mm film is over 100mp. Same photographic process, less spinal contortion!

It's flowery verbose language that articulates the posh and elitist nature of art. People describing something that someone of higher standing thought looked cool to try and gain clout with them.

That's all there is too it.

> Remarkable for its composition
bland statement saying its art
> sense of light and space
the color gradient or shading if drawn, space is open white area

I hang out both here on /p/ and on /ic/, I do photography and painting. Over on /ic/ there's an ongoing discussion about how contemporary painters, both figurative and abstract, can't compose for shit, and the argument is that anybody who has any interest in composition will gravitate towards photography. Painting today is all technique and zero storytelling/composition.

Have a look here, this is not the biggest, but still a pretty big figurative painting competition, $25k prize, with some big names competing. Do you see anybody who actually cares about composition there?

I'm seriously asking, I'd like to see /p/'s take on the state of contemporary figurative painting.

The other big competition is this one, look through the different categories and tell me if you see any composition worth a damn.

It’s almost like some outside force corrupted and subverted art in the west to demoralize and fragment its people, and because the overwhelmingly christian and pagan themes and justifications that ran through it offended them. Almost like the emphasis on talent itself was bigotry.

I'm with you. But for some reason, ateliers today are hyper-focused on technique but never teach a thing about composition, narrative and storytelling. It's like we've lost the ability to develop a narrative within a painting.

Pic related is Will St John, one of the best painters to come out of the (american) atelier system. He's represented by Saatchi Yates, holds exhibitions worldwide, and this is the shit he paints. Flawless technique, but wtf is this?

Most people dont carry the gear needed to do deep focus telephoto shots so they stand out. That's it. That makes this picture visually distinct. It used to be be technically difficult to achieve. But today? Oh boy. Buy a micro four thirds, 25mm f1.8, 45mm f1.8/75mm f1.8 and you can go arting with all your gear in 2 jacket pockets. Same image quality as the legendary canon 5d III, "the first digital camera that matches film".

Now, the actual arting part is intuitive.
>Like, I don't get it. I just don't get composition, what they mean by form and structure, I DON'T GET IT
It looks like waves. But it's also stairs. In a church. Get it?
What else is there to get? If you can't just get that and interpret something from that, what are you smoking?

Most of what critics write is meant to fellate their own ego. Their mental existence is that of a man constantly sucking his own dick until he turns in on himself. Ignore them. Just look and think. The arting part is intuitive.

Sometimes when a troll says some really stupid shit to me I'll make posts from their side to see just how retarded I suspect they are. Maybe I went a little too hard in the paint this time around, but that's okay sometimes. We all like to have fun in different ways. None of my trolls have ever posted a photo. Non of them have ever btfo me with their amazing work. I remain unimpressed by both their photography and their lazy and unintelligent critiques.
The only time they ever expose themselves or become vulnerable is in their shit talking/critiques of my photos because they are far too cowardly to ever post a photo. I've heard many many unbelievably stupid things from them. Just remarkably stupid and tasteless garbage. It's actually pretty amusing and reassuring. I'm always open to fair critique. No. I don't samefag. If someone says something like all pictures with a centered horizon are utter shit I'll go say that to someone posting a centered horizon picture or ask if all center horizon pictures are shit.

A troll said that you can't have a good picture if it doesn't have any meaning and that is why pictures I've posted are all bad even if they look cool or are actually good pictures. I went and posed that exact argument in this thread and it turns out troll is a retard as I suspected.

It's also funny because then the troll sees his exact argument or critique get absolutely torn to shreds by non-retards.

You either make art, or you jibber and faff about art. Successful artists do both.
