Getting a good layered haircut is the first step. Without that your curls will always look bad. It's likely that your hair is too damaged to be saved by products.
Use a curl friendly shampoo only once a week by rubbing it into ur hands and massaging ur scalp gently.
Use curl friendly and moisturizing conditioner and/or leave-in on a daily basis.
Use DIY masks with essential oils regularly (I do this before shampooing so as to protect the hair strands from damage)
When applying any product try to scrunch it into your strands instead of just slapping it onto your hair.
I have the same hair type and I actually dislike the curly hair aesthetic, so what I like to do is use heavy products that weigh your curls down (such as the cantu curl cream). By doing that my hair looks more "wavy" and a little flat instead of poofing out.
This is just a personal preference tho, so if you want your hair to be really curly and voluminous use lightweight products.
Go to curlsbot dot com and other research platforms to check any product for harmful ingredients. You don't wanna blind buy.
Reddit threads and yt videos can also help, but don't be illusioned to buy the most expensive premium products out there. Currently I'm using products from Hask, Cantu and Bali Curls.
