>Daurentius is the first Slavic high-chieftain to be recorded by name, by the Roman historian Menander Protector, who reported that the Avar khagan Bayan I sent an embassy, asking Daurentius and his Slavs to accept Avar suzerainty and pay tribute because the Avars knew that the Slavs had amassed great wealth after repeatedly plundering the Byzantine Balkan provinces. Menander Protector (trans.1): “What man has been born, what man is warmed by the rays of the sun, who shall make our might his subject? Others don't conquer our land, we conquer theirs. In summary, the Slavs arrived as colonizing, invading conquerors, whereas the Germanic tribes arrived as armed refugees fleeing before the Huns and the Goths under Hunnic vassalage, and the Avars were fleeing before the Gokturks, too, and were originally Roman Foederati. Western historiography, and even Turkish historiography, is merely "shifting theses", attributing the successes of the Slavs to non-Slavs, and the defeats and failures of the non-Slavs to the Slavs, against the entirety of primary sources, proper modern historiography, and archaeology. Besides, the premise that the Avars ruled the Slavs and instigated their expansion was restored into the mainstream in the 1990s by German/Austrian historians, Herwig Wolfram and Walter Pohl, who are infamous for their revisionist premises towards the Slavs.
