I like the idea of Spider-man, I just hate the execution. I like the whole loner that constantly gets shat on by life and people but even then still self-sacrificing to such an extreme degree that it ruins his life because his uncle’s death drives him to do the right thing no matter what, I like how he’s a cringy guy when wearing the mask because he’s a nerd trying to appear confident and cool, I like the animal themed science gone wrong aspect that him and many of his villains share, I like how they introduced later Otto as a mentor and father figure fallen from grace, I’m even okay with all the evil iterations of Spider-man like Venom and Doppelganger despite getting a little uncreative and straying from the core themes. I hate the multiverse shit they’ve aggressively attached themselves to because of Miles and the Madam Web shit. I really doesn’t coherently work at all with what Spider-man initially was. I hate much of a hodgepodge of random shit there is and how it lacks a deeper more fleshed out interpersonal dissection of the villains like what Doc Oct eventually got. Sandman being a criminal because of his daughter isn’t really that much. I also hate how dull and boring and hockey it gets. It really needs a uniform visual style like Batman has with the whole retrofuturistic 20’s gothic noir style. I think something a little more bubbly like the Ultimate series should become the standard with something else to really make it its own without all the cringy Joss Whedon tier writing traps. I also hate the crossover shit but that’s a staple of Marvel comics and is never going away.
