to be fair gx's drift mechanic is really tough to use
you should try x on the n64
the only real difference with the kart style toggle driftmode is that you're not required to steer out of the drift, you just release the trigger whereas with f-zero x it's momentum based like a real car but you can force the cars to enter a drift by using the side strafe while turning.
