>"self-serving nature" is an odd description to apply to Sonic
I mean, that IS his description, no? He only lives for himself. If he helps others, it's because that's an action he likes, and so it's a self-serving act. Sonic is the definition of hedonism, except he just acts hedonistically without the moral aspect.
>Black Knight
I don't even think BK is canon by your definition, but let's assume it is.
Even then, Sonic's position in that game wasn't even different from every other situation he's been in. It was just Merlina having a different point of view and trying to kill Sonic with overwhelming force, that's the type of cut and dry, black and white situation
>You can put Sonic in a situation where the entire world is designed specifically to destroy him and break him down, but he himself has been established to be the exact kind of person that would never compromise on his beliefs and actions in spite of that.
See, you can't actually claim that, since that has never happened. And the moment it does happen, then I feel like Sonic's stubbornness will stop being admirable and start being creepy, like he's an entity so detached from humanity that he can't be changed no matter what Berserk-tier torture happens.
>you'd likely have to dig even deeper than that and explore why Sonic thinks the way he does and where it truly comes from.
I have no problem with that. My core axioms for Sonic's character and what drives his decisions are: "Sonic is someone who always takes the most convenient path" and "Sonic is someone who likes to lead". Those are the two main things I've interpreted from his character. "Convenient" in this case, means the path that takes the least amount of mental stress/anguish/effort/etc...
If I'm basing it off of that, then we just need to create a narrative where the current threat wins if Sonic keeps adhering to these principles. Do you want to hear my current idea for such a story?
