it doesn't actually undermine the narrative because of what the punishment was. God punishes humans with civilization. Adam has to eat plants and till hard soil and eve has to bear more children and obey him in all things. they pass on the sin to their offspring because their children are also living in civilization. In theory, if you could return to monke, maybe original sin wouldn't apply, but presumably that would be difficult to do. your offspring would have to both be an infant and trapped in the wild and numerous enough to reproduce and also not benefiting form civilization in any way.
