Yes, exactly.
The Kingdom of Israel in the Bible was conquered by the Neo-Assyrians in 722-720 BC and most of the population was forcibly removed from the land. These were the so-called 10 "Lost" tribes because unlike the Judeans later, the Israelites were not allowed to return to the land.
Later in 587 BC, the neighboring Kingdom of Judah was also conquered by the Neo-Babylonians with the people also forcibly removed. However, after the Neo-Babylonians were defeated by the Persians in 539 BC, the Judeans were released from captivity by Cyrus the Great and allowed to return to Judah.
Eventually, Judaea became a protectorate of the Roman empire in 63 BC. All of the Jesus stuff happened. Then the jews tried to rebel against Roman rule and got completely BTFO. The Romans conquered Jerusalem, destroyed the Temple and most of the city, and killed, enslaved, or deported almost the entire population.
The jews spent the next 1900 years wandering around pissing everyone off and developing the modern rabbinca Talmudic form of judaism that is the religion followed by jews today.
After WWI, Britain ended up controlling Palestine. Large numbers of Zionist jews started moving there. This led to conflicts with the Arabs living there, lots of fighting, and eventually the creation of the modern State of Israel.
But no, the modern State of Israel is definitely not the same thing as the Biblical Kingdom of Israel. Modern Israelites aren't event the descendants of the original Israelites, because their ancestors were from the Judean tribes.
There was never really an ancient Unified Kingdom. Israel and Judah were always two different, distinct kingdoms and ethnic groups. The Judeans only started with the we wuzz the real israelites stuff and retconned this into their history after their return from Babylonian captivity as a way to try to assert claims to ALL of the land from the people who were living there.
