I mostly play in local with frens so we don't have to follow the "online" dynamics. Sure when in a fightan some new dlc/character/season drop we maybe focus on that game for a weekend but then mostly we go back on our usual routine (we rotate the games we play very often).
I'm a bit sad for people who don't have frens that crash at your house for a pizza, beer and some fightan game all together and have to count on online only. Maybe new generations doesn't even know what i'm talking about because they didn't experienced arcades, who knows.
