You specifically said animation. Same character designer that worked on Lodoss did Escaflowne by the way, except this time he wasn't hindered by a shitty director and a blasé DnD clone, so he was allowed to really shine here. Here we can see an actual swordfight that puts the dogshit in Lodoss to shame. Not that Escaflowne is without flaw of course, it has many of the typical issues found in old anime, but its a shame that retro larpers are so ignorant.
