I think FRIEND is the Man. The Man hangs out around trees, which would be appropriate for someone who resembles the Cheshire Cat. His association with eggs would also line up with what we know about the Cat Petterz games. He and his eggs often being in strange superpositions of existing and not existing could be a Schrodinger's Cat reference. I don't think the Man is Gaster - Gaster seems like he's locked outside of the world rather than being in it corporeally.
