To add to what this anon said, Eclipse Crest Greatshield is the only shield good vs Magic.
You can increase your Magic defense with Scholar's Shield or Shield Grease but other than that just sprint away

Magic and Lightning sucks for Guardian, since you get 1 good shield against those type of elemental damage (Dragon Claw Greatshield being the only good greatshield vs Lightning)
