The real difference between the guys at Gainax and the guys at Khara was when they were doing things like Eva or FLCL they were really changing their mind in flight and going where the shows process took them.
All their metashit works backwards from the reference beats they want to incorporate, instead of being forward looking from how the work itself is playing out.
