Tails being a mechanic is different from Tails being skilled with gemstones or mythical powers, or his genius rivaling Eggman's.
The entire plot point and handling of Tails' character in Adventure 2 as a 'rival to Eggman' was the beginning of the end of his original vision and characterization by Judy Totoya as a rival to Sonic who had the potential to surpass Sonic as a speedster hero, and the potential he was shown to have reached in the first Adventure.
Maekawa took Tails in a completely different direction, one that has derailed his character entirely and led to him being treated as a Sally Acorn stand in during the Meta Era and now as a directionless wimp in the Flynn era.
A fucking disgrace. I would say this is comparable to how dirty Flynn did Fiona but no, it's worse. Fiona was a westfag character that had no relevance outside of Archie. Tails had relevance throughout all of Sonic and Maekawa's sins made all Tailses pay the price.
He replaced Tails' role as Sonic's speedster friendly rival with his donutsteel original character Sonic recolor and Knuckles' role as Sonic's butt-heading antagonistic grounded counterpart with his donutsteel original character. It's terrible when Tangle steps on Cream and Amy's toes, and it's even worse when Shadow steps on Tails and Knuckles' toes. A nightmare character that swallowed the franchise whole with how much of an obnoxious black hole he is that stole the roles of existing characters and rivals. One of the worst additions to the franchise and one I hope burns.

A shitty Nicole rip off by Pontac and Graff who wrote Tails as a Sally stand-in. One of the knock-on effects of Sega of Japan hiring Westerners who only know how to write stories with Sally while refusing to let them use the character. A compromise that pleases no one and hurts the worldbuilding and characterization of existing characters. Nightmare franchise.
