They didn't. Obsidian agreed to and signed the 16 month contract. Even Avellone said the game was finished within time. It was Obsidian's management who told them to add more telling their devs that they could get a time extension from Bethesda. They did the same shit with Alpha Protocol and Sega.

Everyone loves to forget that the game didn't work on release.
