There's a food/water source nearby, maybe even an infested house, which enables new colonies that eventually start scouting your place. You can get some outdoor ones that can help if you place them in discrete positions in your yard etc. Good chance they'll hit the traps outside first and start killing the colony off before they even start wandering indoors in significant numbers.
