Another reason is, people don't play them with their friends anymore. Back when it was the usual to play Local CO-OP, you'd get all the boys together and have a tournament, or just play against your best bro after school. I don't think a lot of people do this Online (I've seen a few but it's not as usual as hanging out at someone's place jammin').
Meta faggotry is also more common (probably due to easier access of information), so I'd say (from experience) that's it's common for one of the friends to just study the shit out of the game and tryhard, making it unfun for the casual friends (I will admit in some games that's me, but partly because I play online).
