>How do you come to this conclusion? In all interviews I read, he seems completely oblivious to what made DeS great.
>The only insightful statements were about the not-understanding-english-and-having-to-fill-in-the-blanks. And maybe the story about him pushing cars over a slippery hill in the winter once.
He specifically cites Ico as a huge inspiration, and you can see the Ico influence all over Demon's Souls but it vanishses in later titles. He could easily make another Ico style game but chooses not to. He's a shrewd businessman, and he just lucked into a popular gameplay style by making his dream game he had in his head, while also trying to innovate gameplay conventions.
The writing and storytelling in later Souls games (especially 3 and Elden Ring) feels completely phoned in, like he doesn't care. Hint: I think it's because he doesn't care about them, and they were just paychecks.
I mean, can you blame him? His games are selling tens of millions of copies while AAA western dev games are flopping.
So I see him as knowing, and intentionally selling out a bit. My only complaint is that he didn't ensure that his games (Dark souls and Demon's Souls) got proper ports to modern consoles insead of letting Sony butcher them.
