It was warranted. I was a dumb child at the time so I didn't mind, but looking back at it the voice acting was atrocious, they changed dialog to add in dumb jokes like it was Ghost Stories, the took out any and all reference to death, booze, or guns in a show about pirates, and they removed entire arcs from the story.
The theme song turned out ok though.
