Third party collaborations aren’t a black box operation wherein a dev gets a license, wad of cash, and zero oversight. It’s a supervised effort basically 24/7, especially with larger brands like Nintendo.

The fact that Cranky has continued to be referred to as DK’s arcade preseason in subsequent, non-rare entries is more than enough to make it clear that Nintendo approves of the choice.
