The starting scene is in some tavern, after the wanderer already took over the rogue cathedral. As for tyrael's quest. It was stupid, but he didnt really have other options. There wasnt a place you could take the soulstone that wouldnt cause a problem in the long term.
(and Im pretty sure the story team at blizzard north, and the cinematic team were communicating that well. The cinematics don't line up that well to the rest of the story.)
