We can partially blame Midway for killing the franchise after they acquired it in the buyout of Atari. Apparently they thought it would draw sales away from Mortal Kombat at the time.
It's a bullshit excuse because the concept behind combining dino-gods and other giant primordial beasts with a post-apocalypse and Conan-esque sword and sorcery has far more creative avenues than the gimmicky martial arts soap opera that MK was becoming by the early 00's.
