I was trying to be concise but I will expound upon it. Anti-authoritarianism is on the rise and there's a big ol tug of war going on. A lot of americans are either "anti-interventionist" (middle/all), "america first fuck everyone else focus on here" (right wing), or "anti-imperialist"/"anti-colonialist" (left wing). A huge chink of the US wants to pull all or most of the money and influence out, either for selfish reasons or our of concern that the US is being an evil overlord over the rest of the world. What has happened is that this was partially done, and it has both freaked out the pro-authoritarian types, and - because much of it was done in a partisan way - the entire left wing. Because the pro-authoritarian left wing sees this as them losing their share of influence, while the anti-authoritarian left wing is split between seeing this as bolstering right wing authoritatians and a minority being begrudgingly happy that it's reducing US power.

Does that clear it up?

Russia proved they can't do shit when their victory day parade had only an single ancient tank because they threw their entire military into a meatgrinder. They were jazzed up as being this great and powerful evil but it turns out they only have a seat at the table because of nukes and can't really project power.
