You don't have to go to a class, just do anki and read grammar guides by yourself, then get to a point where you barely know enough Japanese to read a simple visual novel with a texthooker and a dictionary really slowly, and just keep reading and improving from there. This is what worked for me, after seven months of learning I am able to comfortably read and enjoy visual novels (while looking up unknown words with a texthooker and popup dictionary), and I was even able to recently have a conversation with someone in Japanese, despite having never spoken out loud in Japanese before. I'm sure I made a lot of mistakes, and I wasn't particularly fast at speaking, but I was still able to say what I wanted to say. If a retard like me can get as far as I have, then so can you.
