I've been reading old issues of Warhammer Monthly lately, and it's amazing how silly they were allowed to be, and how much of the basic universes were established in that silliness.
AoS's problem is that it never got that period of initial silliness where a bunch of writers were allowed to do whatever the fuck they wanted as long as it was cool. AoS was born after GW started taking their stuff much more seriously and wanted greater synergy between the lore and the model range
I think that's why the best AoS lore is in the Battletomes. The novels have to sell models but the Battletome lore just needs to be fun and evocative.
